Perhentian Trip Package

A regular reader and avid traveller (http://lifeislikethat.com/), Jam, asked in a comment how much it cost me for the package to Perhentian and Redang Islands. If he was asking, I believe, others would be asking too. Well, here is the answer.

The owner of Fauna Holiday Sdn. Bhd. tour agency, Ong Seng Yeow, is a family friend of my Kota Bharu friend. Ong was recommended to us by my friend, who called him Ah Yeow. He has an older sister who was a classmate of my friend, hence the relationship. He can be trusted.

Although a Kelantanese, Ah Yeow operated from Kuala Besut in Terengganu, from a coffee shop called Restoran Makanan Laut Lucky which my friend said was owned by him, although Ah Yeow said it was a relative's coffee shop. The sister has a shop on the same lane.

You can visit Fauna Holiday Sdn. Bhd. website for a package very similar to ours here http://www.faunaholiday.com/p_cocohut.php. Our package was customised.

In dealing with Ah Yeow, do not use the email stated on his website. He will tell you that his computer is down, etc. When we were there, I did not see any computer in the coffee shop. Call him on his handphone. A fax will be handy for the correspondence. He is the Managing Director, Office Manager, Account Clerk and Despatch Boy all rolled into one. He has no assistant to deal with the "email" at the "office" in the coffee shop, although he has a driver cum porter in Kuala Besut and tourist guides based at the chalets where he has business relations. The only time he would be at the Terminal Pelancongan in Kuala Besut was when he sent his clients off at the jetty or when he received them there.

If you want a good guide, ask Ah Yeow for Annuar. Annuar was based at New Cocohut Chalet & Restaurant when we were there.

Accommodation at New Cocohut Chalet

Location
New Cocohut is situated at one end of a very long beach, which stretched all the way from Teluk Keke (also written as Teluk KK). I considered the beach to be the second best, bettered only by Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil. Next to New Cocohut is D' Ayumni Chalet, followed by Sea Horse Cafe and Divers, Universal Divers and lastly, Tuna Bay Resort.

Rooms
The ground floor of the longhouse where we stayed (5 rooms) consisted of quad rooms, with two double beds in each room. There was only one 3-pin socket in each room, so bring along an extension cable/ sockets if you need to charge your batteries or electrical equipment at the same time. No bath towel was provided. Provided are soap and toilet tissue.

Restaurant
The meals were not overly spicy and were especially suitable for Western palate or those who were not used to spicy food.

Safety
At New Cocohut Chalet where we stayed, all our belongings were intact. Nothing reported lost or stolen. The rooms were not made up by the chalet housekeeping team when you left the room on excursion/ snorkelling trips the following morning. New Cocohut did not provide safe deposit box at the reception counter. If you want to leave important/ valuable items at the reception counter, you have to take the risk of trusting the receptionists or leaving them in the rooms.

About Perhentian Kecil Beaches

Long Beach
Long Beach on Perhentian Kecil lived up to its reputation as being the most beautiful beach. It was indeed beautiful, with its ½ kilometre long, soft, powdery white sand beach. There was no dead coral peppering the beach here. Its beach was wide and sloped gently into the sea. The water was clean, clear and shallow. With a combination of all these factors, it was no wonder the most popular beach, with the most visitors, mainly young western backpackers. I love the beach too.

The following photographs showed the scenery from the south to the north. The southern-most chalet was Rock Garden Village and the northern-most chalet was Moonlight Chalet.

D'Lagoon Chalet Beach
Up north, 10 minutes' away by water-taxi, on the same side as Long Beach, is a 50 metre long beach where D'Lagoon, the only chalet is situated. The beach is full of dead coral but the water is crystal clear.

Turtle Bay Beach
Turtle Beach and Adam & Eve Beach, both on the northwest of Perhentian Kecil Island, were similar. The water was crystal clear but the beach was heavily littered with dead, broken coral.

Adam and Eve Beach

Coral Bay or Teluk Aur Beach
We stepped foot on Teluk Aur or Coral Bay Beach as it was getting dark. The water was very calm and clear. As I was busy taking photos of the building there, I did not pay enough attention to the beach. Therefore, I could not recall much of what I saw of this ½ kilometre long beach.
